Thing #18 Podcasting

I did it!  It only took me three different microphones.  This really was a very simple, small task, but for some reason the hardware wasn’t working!  Could it possibly have been the operator???

Thing #22 NING & Classroom 2.0

January 25th, 2010 by

It seems that social networking CAN be used productively in the classroom!  I enjoyed digging around on these two sites and actually reading several of the articles written about social networking within a school.  I plan to take a look at our policies which may restrict our students at CPA.  However, the one thing I found as I was reading was that schools in general create all sort of policies “just in case” a student misbehaves and uses the technology incorrectly.  The actual percentage of that ever happening is quite small, according to everything I read.  It seems that “general conduct” policies could actually cover the misbehavior without us having to create a long list of “don’t ….or else” types or rules!

Thing #21 Pageflakes

January 25th, 2010 by

This assignment was actually pretty fun.  I created a page with Hilton Head stuff, like weather, news, restaurants, etc.

The page seemed really easy and I could see how it’s sort of a version of facebook where you can show all the things you’re interested in.  In the classroom a teacher could easily put a variety of resources about a particular topic and the kids would get the “latest” news surrounding that topic.

Thing # 20 Google Docs

January 24th, 2010 by

This has seemed easier than the wiki idea when considering collaborative work.  For me, this could be used for the staff agenda, the Chronicle, and even things like textbook list, etc.  I’ll see how it actually works after I hopefully get some responses and changes to the document!

Thing #19 You Tube

January 23rd, 2010 by

This link to You Tube is specially dedicated to our own Steve Smith who I understand will be doing his own version of Pants On The Ground at an upcoming event!

I also had fun learning “how-to” make boxes and enjoyed showing Fred what’s available on YouTube with his business.  There were videos about machines he uses and some companies he’s familiar with.

Thing # 17 podcasts

January 23rd, 2010 by

Again, this task felt overwhelming to me because of how much “stuff” is out there. I did finally find some podcasts which interested me, most of which are short devotionals. I especially like one from Max Lucado.
Something I found troubling was the amount of advertising you have to watch before getting what you’ve subscribed to. In fact, some of the advertising was inappropriate for students. Is there a way around that?

This was interesting, but I got frustrated with a lack of resources on Christian education. Once I dug deeper, though, I was able to find some resources. I could see how I would use this to provide some staff development or to use at staff meetings to teach specific things. The resources are huge!

Thing # 15 LibraryThing

January 11th, 2010 by

This reminds me of NetFlix where you can go ahead and decide what you want to see. You can look at what others find interesting and create your own list. This is Amazon on steroids – not only getting to read reviews of books (where I find myself getting lost just browsing!) but also getting to see inside the “mind” of other readers and what they enjoy. I enjoy that aspect of NetFlix because you can look to see what others are watching.

I loved the idea of the Early Reviewers and may sign up for that. As much as I like to read, it would be fun to be a part of writing a review for a new book before it comes out. Looks like lots of others folks have the same though because there are tons more requests than there are books.

Thing #15 Delicious

January 11th, 2010 by

Again – very interesting process. It seems that most of the web 2.0 is involved with helping all of us “organize” our stuff. With so much new technology and an ever changing amount of sites and information, these new sites really do help declutter!

Need to make a grocery list or a checklist for your students? Go to www.tadalist.com and start getting organized!

I found another link today that is interactive that is really great. It’s www.contractfromamerica.com It’s sort of a take off from Newt Gingrich’s Contract with America, but this is interactive where you can post comments and vote. Check it out! http://www.contractfromamerica.com/Idea.aspx
